NEWS RELEASE Ascender Corp. Fonts Featured in Microsoft ProductsXNA Game Studio and Syndicated Client Experiences (SCE) Starter Kit both leverage sample fonts licensed from Ascender ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL April 22, 2008 Ascender Corporation, a leading provider of advanced font products, today announced that it has licensed a variety of original fonts to Microsoft for distribution to its software developers. The Ascender fonts feature unique type design and font engineering characteristics that showcase features in Microsoft’s various products and technologies for developers. The Microsoft Syndicated Client Experiences (SCE) Starter Kit lets developers create rich, smart client applications using .Net 3.0 and WPF technologies to leverage the push capabilities of RSS with full control over the presentation of the content including news, photos, podcasts, videos and more. SCE applications are able to use fonts to enhance the content by displaying text in a custom, branded user interface. Examples of SCE applications include the Times Reader by the New York Times, Seattle Post-Intelligencer P-I Reader and the MSDN Reader. Microsoft’s XNA Game Studio enables hobbyists, academics and independent game developers to easily create video games for Windows and the Xbox 360 console using cross-platform .NET-based gaming libraries. XNA Game Studio supports scalable TrueType fonts, providing game designers with a rich palette of creative options for displaying text in styles that match the personality and genre of their game title. The Redistributable Font Pack for XNA Game Studio features eight high quality Ascender fonts in a variety of styles. The Ascender fonts included in these SDKs are specially licensed to permit software developers to redistribute them as part of the applications and products built with Microsoft’s tools. Each sample font features an ASCII character set and additional glyphs to showcase certain advanced OpenType features. The font data was optimized with light ClearType hinting to maximize readability on screen at small sizes. The fonts are licensed “as is” solely for redistribution within products developed using the SDKs and may not be modified in any way or distributed with any other products without an additional license. If developers require any customization to the fonts they should contact Ascender Corporation.
